Jean-Michel Byron was born and raised in South Africa. He started as a session musician with cover bands and began writing and recording his own songs. One of these recordings went to drummer Bob Colomby, who introduced Byron Toto. He sang as a follow-up to the outgoing front singer Joseph Wiliams with the band for a year on tour with and recorded on their greatest hits album “Past To Present” (1990) four new songs. After his involvement with Toto in 1991 he brought his first solo album Byron on the market. Since then he played on albums of various artists.
